JOHN Dymott, Peter Sykes and several other readers said the building in the background of Brenda Mitchell's postcard of Bournemouth Pleasure Gardens printed on March 8 is the Brookside, now part of the White Hermitage Hotel.

Brookside and the adjacent Brookside Cottage were Grade II listed in 1974.

The poet and leader of the Oxford Movement John Keble stayed and died at the picturesque Italianate stucco villa in the 1860s.

By 1934 the hotel had a passenger lift to all floors as well as hot and cold water plus gas heaters in every bedroom.
