OLIVE Knott of Northbourne said her father-in-law Alex Knott and his brother Edward Knott ran the Knott Brothers Ltd Esso Self Service Filling Station as shown on the picture of Charminster Road, Bournemouth, taken in 1970 and printed on November 21.

Olive's husband Kenneth Knott also worked there as well as their son Robert.

The Knott brothers also had a garage at the Fiveways.

Self service filling stations started in America in the late 1960s and by the early 1970s oil companies introduced them to garages in Britain.

During the 1960s and 70s Green Shield stamps could be exchange for fuel as the sign on the forecourt indicates.
