Gillian Dyer of Poole sent in a photograph of Sturminster Marshall Football Club taken circa 1959. Her father Ron Pope was the treasurer and secretary of the club but is not in the picture, perhaps he was the man behind the camera.

The men are named as follows, back row, left to right, the coach Arthur Smith, Graham Singleton, Eric Mace, Bob Samways, Rob Bryer, Mick James, Keith Cilvert, Graham Egerton and Dickie Park, the manager. In the front row are Nigel Mace, Mick Smith, David Thorne, Chris Hyde and Norman Waterman.

Ron was still secretary in 1964 when the club had done so well in the Dorset League that they gathered a regular group of followers over a hundred strong and a Sturminster Marshall Football Supports Club was created.

The Echo at the time said the supporters club,"raised money through bingo, a jumble sale, a combined coffee evening and mannequin parade and a charity football match between the women supporters and the men over 35", to provide some form of changing accommodation on the village playing field as there was nowhere for the teams to change or shower.

A member of the club's committee, Mrs C Pope, wife of the football club secretary, Ron Pope, said", We really do get wonderful support from the village".

The footballers' supporters included 90-year-old George Dennis who lived in a council house near the football pitch. He watched every home game in all weather from his front porch.

Contact Gillian on 01202 659924 or Echoes if you recognise any of the players and know where they are now.
