Edgar Head Vivian was already a navy regular with 19 years service in the Royal Navy when he took part in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. His younger brother Harold George Head was one of the first tank commanders to see action at the Somme just over a month later.

Edgar was the great uncle to Pat Roe ( nee Binden ) who submitted the picture of him in his military uniform. He survived the Great War but died aged 37 in a motorcycle accident in 1917.

The Head and Vivian families were well known in the building trade in Bournemouth.
