POOLE Mayor, Cllr Peter Adams is seeking help to track down the D Day veteran in this photo.

Cllr Adams was speaking at the commemoration at the US Coastguard memorial on Poole Quay in June when the man approached him and asked to be allowed to address those who had gathered around.

“He said he could tell us what it was really like,” said Cllr Adams. “I didn’t know what to do but I said ‘ok’ and handed him the microphone.”

He said the man had taken part in the D Day landings in Normandy 70 years-ago and spoke for four or five minutes about what it had been like.

Poole had been one of the major embarkations ports for the invasion of France which signalled a turning point in the Second World War.

Afterwards Cllr Adams asked people who the former serviceman was and no-one seemed to know.

“I want to find him and invite him to the Mayor’s Parlour for a coffee and a chat and find out his story,” said the mayor.

Anyone who knows the man or who can help the mayor in his quest can contact him through his secretary Carolyne Suter on 01202 633200.
