A VET charity has offered tips to dog owners to prevent their pets from swallowing items by mistake.

The PDSA says its vets have removed everything from tent pegs to radio aerials from pets’ stomachs in the past.

The phenomenon is called ‘pica’ and can prove very dangerous. If an object moves along the digestive system, it can cause a tear or life-threatening blockage.

The PDSA advises owners to take a look around their homes and try to make sure that anything dangerous or easy to swallow is out of paws’ reach.

Also, provide dogs with suitable pet toys, and supervise them to avoid any accidents.

Finally, train the dog from a young age to learn basic commands such as ‘drop’ and ‘leave’ – do not forget to praise them when they do.

Owners who do suspect their pet has swallowed something should contact their vet for advice immediately.
