CYCLING enthusiast, photographer and former Daily Echo correspondent, Trevor Fenwick of Charminster, has died at the age of 86.

Born as an only child in Newcastle, he moved with the family to Manchester, where he completed his education and took up cycling as a boy. It was in Manchester that he met his wife, Betty and the couple went on to welcome a son, Shaun, who in turn has welcomed three children with his wife, Stephanie, including Wayland, 19, Maddison, 15, and Logan, 13.

Trevor worked as an electrical engineer in Bournemouth for many years, working on standardising the electricity supplies in the area.

His son, Shaun, said that his dad's greatest achievement was his time as a professional cyclist.

Shaun says that Trevor was the first English professional cyclist to win a race in Belgium, as well as taking part in the Tour of Britain and continued entering events across the globe throughout his life, winning many accolades along the way.

Trevor enjoyed writing weekly columns for Daily Echo during the 1990s and also started taking photos at cycling events.

Shaun said that his dad had even set up a makeshift darkroom in his home so that he could take the photos, process them and then sell the prints to the people all on the same day.

Trevor was a member of the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers cycling club and he also enjoyed visiting Shaun and his family in France and had learnt French to enable him to live abroad, taking the opportunity on occasion to drive to Spain to cycle with a friend.

Trevor had taken part in the World Veterans Championships in Austria and was due to have a go at attacking a world record this year, but had to withdraw after doctors discovered a brain tumour.

Betty and Trevor had lived in Dorset for around 30 years, with half of that time being spent living in Methuen Road and the other part previously living in Belvedere Road. Betty died in June 2009 following a long period of illness.

Trevor died on July 27 and his funeral will take place today (AUG5) at Bournemouth Crematorium at 2pm.
