DOLLY Maund, well known in Poole as the glass collector at the Lord Nelson pub, died peacefully on May 16, just six months after reaching her 100th birthday.

Dolly Thorne was brought up in Colehill, Wimborne, the eldest of a large family with 11 brothers and sisters, most of whom she nevertheless survived.

At the age of 11 she went into service, and eventually in 1938 she moved to Rockley Road with her husband Charles.

There, she worked at the Lord Nelson on Poole Quay collecting glasses for 40 years, and became well-known and liked by regulars and the community in general.

Known as a local character, who enjoyed a drink and a smoke, she seldom had to pay for a gin, her preferred tipple, as a friend was always around and eager to buy one for her.

Outside work she loved visiting the Dorset Steam Fair, and collecting salt and pepper pots, of which she had more than 3,000 which have been passed on to her children.

In her later years she lived in Blandford Road, Hamworthy, and family members travelled from across the south and the West Country to celebrate her centenary last November.

She leaves her five children, including daughter Janet with whom she lived, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the church in Poole Cemetery at 2.30pm on Monday, June 2.
