ALEX Middlemas, a tireless campaigner for the rights of teachers, died in Dorchester Hospital on April 29, aged 65.

For many years he served as county secretary for the National Association of Schoolteachers and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), and he was well remembered by many members for his staunch support and clear advice.

Over the course of his work with the union he publically defended Dorset teachers against morale damaging attacks from politicians, backed a new appraisal scheme to dismiss incompetent educators, and campaigned against rising class sizes.

Mr Middlemas also stood up for teachers facing abuse and assaults by unruly pupils and parents.

He was described by friends as “a true friend and a wonderful advocate for teachers in Dorset” and “very greatly admired and respected”.

He leaves his wife Caroline, family and friends.

A funeral service was held at Harbour View Woodland Burial Ground, Lytchett Minster, on Thursday, May 8.
