JOHN Phillips, who was more widely known as Snowy, was a dedicated football coach and a devoted family man who died on December 14, 2013 at the age of 77.

As the former coach of the successful Trinidad football team in Parkstone and of a Branksome boys' team, his weekends were spent out on the touchline, whatever the weather.

He was well-respected by footballers and fellow coaches and noted for his no-nonsense attitude and willingness to give his honest opinion.

Snowy was born in Poole and enjoyed 50 years of marriage with wife Roma.

They started their married life in Parkstone, before moving to Lulworth for 13 years and then returning to Upton.

The couple had one son - Jason, who is now 45.

Snowy originally worked with his father re-surfacing drives and car parks before working as a lorry driver, including a long stint driving for the RNLI.

He was a dedicated Arsenal fan. He occasionally travelled to London to watch his beloved team.

And when he and Roma moved to Lulworth, they enjoyed long walks with the dogs. It was a way of keeping fit and active.

Snowy’s death came after a seven month battle with cancer. His funeral was held at St James Church on Friday, January 3 and saw around 160 people attend to pay their respects, including many former footballers who had benefitted from his coaching and guidance.

His wife Roma said: “He was a lovely husband and father, who will be much missed. I couldn't have asked for better.”
