Put your shirt on bike ride success

IT’S the fashion item set to top the most wanted list for the county’s best-dressed fundraisers.

The new jersey for the Daily Echo-backed Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride 2010 was launched on Saturday by two of the shirt’s sponsors.

Iain Noble, the man behind Iain Noble Training, teamed up with Stuart August from Honda of Bournemouth to launch the garment.

Ride organiser Peter Smith-Nicholls said he was delighted to have secured the backing of the local businesses, who will join luxury boat builder Sunseeker, bike shop Primera and the Daily Echo as the event’s principal sponsors. “Every year the ride gets bigger, with more people taking part and more people wanting to show their support,” he said.

“I’m delighted to have Iain and Stuart on board.

“Their backing, and the money raised from jersey sales, will add to the amount we pass to Macmillan – it’s a win-win situation.”

While Stuart is a man used to helping two-wheeled enthusiasts, the customers at his Honda dealership on Poole’s Leyland Road can usually call on the help of an engine to help them over long distances.

So Iain may be just the man to help those who find themselves suddenly reliant on pedal power to prepare for distances ranging from 10 to 100 miles on Sunday, July 4.

SJ Barker Construction, KC Carpets and Flooring, MITIE, PBW Construction, Testlink, Tucker Advertising and Your Say 247 will all proudly displayed their name on the jersey.

England cricket legend David Gower is set to get on his bike again this year, having topped the fundraising charts in 2009.

Organisers are expecting more than 1,000 people to join him.

More than £90,000 was raised from last year’s event, which saw 975 people set off on a variety of routes through Dorset’s beautiful countryside to support the vital work of Macmillan nurses.

I don't know if there was a charity ride today, but some of the people I saw should have been wearing kevlar shirts. It doesn't matter if you're riding for a good cause, 4 abreast on a main road is going to end in tears. Maybe as well as a free t-shirt and a sponsorship form, the organisers could provide basic road safety advice for the people who aren't regular cyclists.
