CYCLISTS keen to chalk up a century are being urged to sign up for the Daily Echo-backed Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride 2010 – by taking on the 100-mile challenge.
The call for super fit cyclists to sign up for a new and improved 100-mile route on Sunday, July 4, has come from local cyclist Phil Tucker, who has himself been treated for cancer.
Phil, the boss of Bournemouth advertising agency Tucker Advertising, backed the revised route, which replaces the combination of 60 and 40 miles routes previously offered.
“I always try my best to give something back to the charities that do so much for cancer patients.
“For me it’s great to be able to do it through cycling – a sport I love.
“This year’s route is an amazing journey through Dorset’s superb countryside.
“It’s a real challenge.
“It would be great if everyone taking part could raise at least £1 for every mile they cycle,” said Phil.
He recently completed a trial of the new route with the founder of the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride, Peter Smith-Nicholls.
Peter founded the event 21 years ago after cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End after losing his father to cancer.
Last year’s event saw 975 cyclists take part – including Daily Echo editor in chief Neal Butterworth – raising some £90,385.
Neal will ride again this year.
The ride starts for the first time this year in Corfe Mullen and includes routes of 10, 20, 38, 48, and 60 miles, as well as the 100-mile challenge.
Long-time backers of the race the Daily Echo, Sunseeker and Primera are again backing the event and students from Boscombe’s Anglo-European College of Chiropractic will return to offer free post-ride massage.
