MUSIC on an organ is “like a piece of impressionist art”, according to Daniel Campbell.
The organist at Richmond Hill St Andrew’s United Reform Church in Bournemouth, who has been playing the organ since he was a child, clearly has a passion for organ music.
“Some people find it difficult to pick out a tune or melody if they cannot hear clearly the right hand, but a musician will hear all the things in between and find a piece more interesting,” Daniel says.
As part of the town’s bi- centenary celebrations, Daniel has organised a series of Saturday afternoon organ concerts at the church, on St Stephen’s Road, featuring melodies familiar to all. The next concert will be given by Stephen Binnington, director of music at Farrington School, near Shaftesbury, next Saturday.
“Stephen’s concert will finish with Louis Vierne’s Carillon de Westminster, an exciting piece on the theme of Westminster Chimes,” Daniel told me.
A video screen will enable the audience to see him at the three-manual console and complimentary refreshments will be served afterwards.
Three dates for your diary are: Stephen Binnington on August 28; Jonathan Bunney on September 11; and Daniel Campbell himself on September 25. Concerts are at 3pm.
