A VICAR who has become so much more than a priest to many will preach his farewell sermon tomorrow at St Mark’s parish church in Talbot Village, Bournemouth.

After nearly 30 years’ service to the community, the Rev Canon Dr Christopher Rutledge retires this weekend, saying farewell to a large congregation.

His parishioners told me how much he means to them.

“The support I’ve had from Christopher over the years has been far beyond the call of duty,” said one.

“He is truly a great friend and his teaching, words of wisdom, sense of humour and understanding have helped me during some difficult times,” said another.

People have been worshipping at St Mark’s since 1870 and under Christopher’s ministry the congregation has grown significantly.

A new extension was completed in 1986 and a hall complex followed in 1992.

The church is a popular wedding venue and many couples have happy memories of being married by Christopher.

Among them are Tracey and Steve McGrath. Christopher not only conducted their wedding ceremony but also christened both their children. Tracey said: “He is exactly what a Christian person should stand for and lives the life. He is approachable, always makes himself available and is an inspiration to all.”

Christopher, husband to Susan and father to 21-year-old Elizabeth, paid tribute to a “really exciting parish” and a church community willing to take leaps of faith” and with “lots of stickability in terms of commitment”.

He said: “As a family we have been truly blessed at St Mark’s. It’s a wonderful community – a great church family, very supportive. We will miss it tremendously.”

But the last word goes to Sharon Matthews, church warden, who told me: “The best thing we can do for Christopher now he is leaving is to carry on his good work. “That’s the best retirement present we could give him!”
