CLAIMS that schools across Dorset will lose millions of pounds under a new funding formula have been branded "scaremongering" by MP Michael Tomlinson.

The National Union of Teachers has launched a so-called School Cuts website citing potential cuts to budgets.

But Mr Tomlinson said no decisions have yet been made by the government and that most schools in his constituency of mid-Dorset and north Poole have seen an increase in per-pupil funding.

"I have been campaigning to change an old, tired out system of schools funding with no rhyme or reason since before the election, and am pleased that the first steps have been taken to fix this broken system" he said.

"I agree with the government that the NUT stepping in at this late hour to attack the new formula is nothing more than scaremongering, and in my view it appears to be politically motivated.

"Most schools have seen an increase in per-pupil funding in my constituency and I will continue to work with all schools in Mid Dorset and North Poole to get the right deal for Poole and Dorset."

Mr Tomlinson stressed the new funding formula is currently the subject of consultation and urged schools, teachers and parents to take part before it closes on March 22.
