You might think Christmas and New Year are over, but not in my house. Not yet anyway.
We’re still waiting for the binmen to come round and take away the debris.
Our normal collection day is Thursday and as Christmas Day and New Year’s Day were Thursdays, we’ve got three weeks worth of rubbish sitting on the drive waiting to be collected.
There are more than 15 sacks full of rubbish and several big cardboard boxes too waiting to go.
To add to that as I was putting the Christmas tree and decorations back up in the loft I spotted some more junk that had to go, including what must have been the canopy from an old baby’s pram and some empty boxes that once had toys in them.
I think we’d kept them “in case we wanted to put them on eBay”.
Oh how many times has that phrase been uttered in our house? The things we’ve put up the loft “for eBay”.
The trouble is I can never be bothered to actually sit down in front of the computer and put the stuff up for sale.
It seems wrong to spend an hour photographing some bit of old tat and writing a florid description of it to try and sell it for a couple of quid.
The postage alone makes selling anything larger than a postcard prohibitively expensive.
I’ve got old football programmes, 11 china bells with flowers on them (one for every month of the year minus the one we lost/broke/never had), tons of baby clothes my wife is “going to sort out”, and boxes and boxes of records.
Remember records? Those big vinyl round flat things we used to put on a turntable and play?
I love records, especially LPs. Their size is so suited to artwork on the cover, and the crackle-hiss of static as the needle picks up all the bits of fluff off the grooves.
There used to be a secondhand record shop in Wolverhampton where I used to spend hours chatting with the manager, about which was the best Springsteen bootleg live album. (Sugarlands he reckoned. I didn’t know, but I guessed it wasn’t the Live at Roundhay Park, Leeds, that I bought from a record fair in the City Hall on Sunday).
Now those old memories are up the loft. I could have them down, but in all honesty I don’t have the time or the energy to listen to most of them.
Trouble is I love my iPod too. But I would like to recoup some of the investment I made in vinyl.
I looked into ebaying them (one of those new verbs that kids today should be urged to avoid, like “to task”, as in: I have been tasked with writing this column today by my editor), but they aren’t worth the postage.
The editor said to me one day this week that my glass really must seem half empty all the time.
This was in response to me telling him that if a ticket to Glastonbury was £175 a head and you had to go for all five days I thought I’d want to see Led Zep, Springsteen and Madonna headlining and sleep in a decent camper van.
Plus I needed a telly and some curtains so I could spend the day avoiding looking at the wierdos wandering round the site.
We decided that I’d be better off watching it on TV.
So I’m counting that as I haven’t spent £350 on two tickets to Glastonbury I don’t have to recoup £350 from ebay.
Job well done.

we missed a recycle collection so we have lots of xmas and we hardboard, paper and glass and we have used both the spare bags, we could have done with more bags for the recycling. There is no need to have all that rubbish out for collection in the above photo

Also before you criticise my recycling habits can I inform you that as a houshold we have been recycling for about 20 years long before it was trendy and the coucil provided bins and I do flatten all my boxes cans and plastic containers, my only complaint is that as i have gone to the trouble to recycle i needed extra bags especially as we have 4 grandchildren who came for christmas and we had the packaging and paper to get rid of.

Should move to Bournemouth. Collections on New Years Day. Both bins full. 2 weeks of household and 3 weeks of recycling with bags provided.
