EVERY ten years or so there’s a hairdo that makes us want to rush to the nearest salon to “get the look”.

We’ve had the Purdy, the Diana, the Rachel and even the Pob, but once again it’s Audrey (Hepburn) who tops the latest style poll.

The popular actress was cited as the most iconic beauty in a survey to mark the 50th anniversary of shampoo brand Head & Shoulders.

When Audrey Hepburn starred as Holly Golightly in the award-winning film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, her sleek chignon became the hair-style du jour.

But five decades later the classic “up do” is still one of the most requested styles in hairdressing salons today.

So what makes a hair style iconic?

“It is something that can last the test of time,” says Andrew Bell of Mane Street in Bournemouth, who has notched up nearly 50 years in the business.

“The Audrey Hepburn chignon is still popular now as it can be adapted to suit different looks and the big Jackie Kennedy style blow dry is also back this season.”

Norma Bowman, spokeswoman for the local Scissors hair salon group, says for her the most iconic hair cut is the bob.

“It is a style that has managed to move with the times starting with Mary Quant in the ‘60s.

“I think it has endured the test of time because it can be adapted to suit most people’s face shapes.”

And Tracie Beardsley of Fab Frocks in Westbourne, who is a big Audrey Hepburn fan, says she’s not surprised that she is still top of the polls.

“She has that timeless beauty. She is very natural unlike some of these so-called manufactured beauties we have now.”

l There will be an exclusive screening of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ at Fab Frocks of Westbourne at 7.30pm on Tuesday October 18, to mark the boutique’s tenth anniversary.

The event is in conjunction with the Purbeck Film Festival, the largest rural film festival in the UK. There are just 30 tickets available at £10, which includes a drink on arrival.
