Nestled along a quiet Chelsea thoroughfare, just off the vibrant King's Road, San Domenico House is a charming boutique hotel.

Quirky rooms, a roof terrace offering great views across west London, and situated a stone's throw from an array of gastro pubs and fashionable restaurants, the privately-owned luxury townhouse is perfect for weekend getaways to the capital.

Described as a "fine treasure hidden away in a quiet residential corner of Chelsea" the hotel interior was brimming with an elegant mix of sumptuous interiors, eclectic antiques and Latin personality.

Recently extended and redesigned, it offers 19 luxury rooms and suites and a bespoke room service menu to compliment the selection of fine and Michelin-starred restaurants within easy strolling distance.

Our room was a delightful split-level chamber, with steps leading from a cosy sofa area down into the main bedroom - which was complete with extravagant four-poster bed.

The room, complete with en-suite marble bathroom, came with free Wifi, cable television, mini-bar, hair dryers, towelling bathrobes, toiletries, its own fridge and air conditioning.

Room service included breakfast, a lunch and dinner menu, afternoon tea and drinks.

While the evening views across London from the terrace bar were breathtaking, what really surprised was - considering San Domenico's position close to Sloane Square - it felt reasonably quiet throughout the night.

San Domenico House bills itself as 'probably one of the very last contemporary hotels in central London with such a storied heritage'.

The red brick building was built circa 1887 as a private residence, remaining that way until the 1950s.

The Victorian style encapsulates the changing times from a postwar London stately home through the 50s, into the liberated creative culture of Chelsea's swinging sixties, and later as separate apartments, before, finally in the 1990s, being re-styled as a boutique hotel.

Each of the bedrooms are individually designed and include an eclectic mix of Royal portraits, lace fabric detailing, Victorian mirrors and panoramic views.

Transformed originally into the Sloane Hotel by famed interior designer Sue Rogers, the hotel space was then sold in 1999 to a tasteful French lady, Delphine Geron, who expanded it into No 31 Draycott Place.

In 2005 it was bought by the widely-respected Italian family, Melpignano, as part of their luxury hotel portfolio.

A hotel spokesman explained: "San Domenico is a world within a hotel – it is a curated story of its own.

"The hotel has welcomed prolific artists, designers, writers and leaders through its doors over the years – and speaks to anyone who desires a sense of unapologetic taste and style.

"It is quite simply a unique place which offers guests not just a hotel stay but a home to build memories."
