The late Ronald Searle took this photograph of Bath Road, Bournemouth, circa 1965.

Before the flyover was built, access for pedestrians to and from the Lower Gardens to Pier Approach and the beach was via the police controlled pedestrian crossing seen here in Bath Road.

In 1972 a flyover was built that separated through traffic from Pier Approach, allowing for the first time traffic-free pedestrian access to and from the Lower Gardens. The picture was sent in by his son Mike Searle.
