AN exhibition celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of master gardener Capability Brown is being held in Dorset.

Known as a creative genius, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown is said to have changed the face of 18th century England, designing country estates and mansions, moving hills and making flowing lakes and serpentine rivers.

The exhibition will be part of the Capability Brown Festival 2016 - the first ever celebration of Brown’s extensive works - and is being held at Milton Abbey in Milton Abbas, near Blandford, from July 10 to August 21.

St Catherine’s Chapel, Milton Abbey, Lord Milton’s mansion, and the village of Milton Abbas are embraced and integrated by a 500 acre landscape designed by Capability Brown, which began in 1763 and continued up to his death in 1783.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view more than 150 images of Brown’s work, which is said to have shaped people’s picture of the quintessential English countryside, in film photography, paintings and embroidery.

There will also be activities for children including interactive games and painting, as well as specially designed walks. A range of events, openings and exhibitions will also be running nationally.
