CHRISTCHURCH florist Kay Willis is celebrating after scooping top awards at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.

The 25-year-old's Brazilian head-dress was awarded a gold medal and she also won the Young Florist of the Year honour.

Kay, a former student at Bournemouth and Poole College, has worked for Lorraine Hanshaw at Fairmile Florists in Christchurch since she was 17-years-old. This is her third time at Chelsea and her most successful to date.

Lorraine told the Daily Echo: "Judging took place on Monday after the Queen had visited the show and we found out yesterday that Kay had won.

"We are all absolutely delighted and I'm so proud of her. It's very exciting because she will also feature on television and she will go to a gala event with the judges."

Pictures of Kay's colourful head-dress were posted on Facebook immediately after she won the award and congratulations flooded in from organisations including the British Florist Association and the Institute of Professional Florists.
