This is Greg, officially Britain's second best bacon sandwich maker - and his secret is cheese, chilli, cider and chocolate.

Greg Thurtle, from Portland, impressed the judges as he finished runner-up at the Great British Bacon Off, organised by Danepak,  in London.

All the entrants were tasked with creating a signature bacon sandwich using the firms Rapid Rasher microwaveable bacon and items from a pantry.

That was followed by a showstopper round, for which they could use £20-worth of their own ingredients.

Photographer Greg, 31, included two types of cheese, chocolate, chillies and cider as well as unsmoked Rapid Rashers in his double-decker showstopper.

He focussed on ingredients from his home county with Portland Bill cider from the Weymouth Cider Company and Dorset chillies and labelled his offering the Dorset Doorstop.

Greg said he applied to the competition after seeing a post on Facebook.

He said: "Like most people I like my bacon so I thought it would be a good excuse to go up to London and eat some free bacon."

Greg said his was the most adventurous entry in the competition, and while it obviously impressed the judges to a degree he felt he was probably pipped to the top title because his creation was a little too risk.

He said: "I went big for the showstopper."

The contest was won by 21-year-old Bristol University students Sophie Armitage, with her creation Don't Go Bacon My Heart, which featured apples, cinnamon, vanilla and French toast.

Kate Charman, Brand and Licensing Manager for Danepak, said: “There were some fantastic bacon sandwich creations on offer today, and all contestants proved that like Danepak they’re serious about bacon."

The judging panel included Holy Bell, who finished as a runner-up in the second season of Great British Bake Off.

She was impressed to see Greg take risks with his entry, saying: "I think Greg's signature was good. It had lots of bacon and it tasted great. I would have gone for brown sauce rather than ketchup though.

"His signature was brave but I wasn't a big fan. However he deserves a special mention as 'Bacon Warrior' because he had the gumption to make something so big and so ridiculous.

"It was great to see that Greg takes risks - he is a risk taker and an obvious lover of bacon."
