THOUSANDS of people enjoyed a day of classic Americana at the second annual Route 66 Show at the weekend.

The event, which took place at the Hurn Bridge Show Ground near Bournemouth Airport on Saturday and Sunday, featured a drive-in cinema, go-karting and live music.

More than 500 cars were also on display, including sports, rally, military and prestige vehicles.

Visitors had the opportunity to watch wrestling shows, cheerleading displays and lawnmower racing.

In addition, movie fans were able to watch Cars, Grease and Fast and Furious at a 'drive-in' cinema during the evenings.

Emma Preston, who helped to organise the event, said sunshine had helped draw in the crowds after a wash-out weekend in 2015.

"There's been much better weather this year apart from a few bad downpours on Saturday," she said.

"The atmosphere has been really lovely.

"It's an event for all the family.

"While there are a lot of cars on display, there's much more going on besides that.

"My business partner Craig Robinson and I wanted to bring something exciting and new to the area last year.

"We feel it'll keep getting better so we're really pleased."

Michael Stewart of the Bournemouth and District Car Club said: "It's been much better on the Sunday as the weather has really cheered up.

"There are a lot more cars and people.

"We've been out in the arena and we've had a lot of interested people asking questions about the club, which is great."

Philip Doughty of the Dorset Military Enthusiasts showed members of the public four service vehicles on display, including a Land Rover and a Jeep.

He said: "It's been quite an interesting weekend.

"Yesterday I was here in a sports car so there's a lot of diversity."
