MORE than 1,500 people turned out to enjoy a special carnival in Burton on Saturday.

The Burton Scout Carnival began with a procession from the primary school in Campbell Road.

Crowds then moved to the recreation ground to enjoy stalls, a dog show, a display of vintage cars, motorcycles and steam tractors and a bouncy castle.

The event is the 8th Christchurch Burton Scout Group's biggest fundraiser of the year.

Group chairman Bob Vine said: "It's been absolutely brilliant.

"Every now and again it rained very hard indeed, but the sun came out again and it turned into a beautiful summer's day.

"We had two large marquees this year so everyone had somewhere to shelter before they came back out to enjoy the fun."

In previous years, the event has finished by 4pm.

However, Mr Vine said: "It was still going until 5pm this year.

"It was very popular."

The group are fundraising for a new hut in the area, with £220,000 left to raise.

As a lease has not yet been granted by the parish council, the money donated by villagers in Burton can't be used for the hut.

Mr Vine said: "All the money raised goes back to the scout group, even though we can't start raising for the hut yet.

"The first priority will always be the kids, so the money will be used as a subsidy to make sure fees don't go up."

Popular stalls this year included a display of wool and an exhibition of vintage farm tools.

"We put on this event each year for the people of Burton and for the kids," Mr Vines said.

"We hope to raise as much as possible for the group. But really, it's for the village and for our scouts to enjoy."
