IT'S game, set and match to 'Wimbornedon' as the world's most famous tennis competition arrives in East Dorset.

Wimborne will be transformed into the All England Lawn Tennis Club this month thanks to husband and wife team Kate and Gordon Compston.

For the duration of Wimbledon - which this year will take place from Tuesday, June 28 until Sunday, July 10 - the market place will become a family-friendly tennis zone.

A temporary bar adorned with tennis balls will be set up in the Square.

Staff dressed as ball boys and girls will serve jugs of Pimms, bottles of Prosecco and a wide range of drinks, along with strawberries and cream, light lunches, afternoon teas and evening tapas.

There will also be sponsored swing balls stand and big TV screens so tennis fans can watch the tournament in comfort.

During Wimbornedon fortnight, there will also be free tennis coaching sessions for budding young tennis stars from 9am to 11am every morning with refreshments such as healthy snacks, juice drinks and smoothies all available from the Deuce Bar.

Kate and Gordon launched the Gin House earlier this year - the sister to the town’s award-winning real ale pub, the Taphouse.

At Christmas, the couple also ran the first Alpine Bar in Wimborne.

Kate said: “Traditionally Wimbledon is a bad time for the pub industry.

"It doesn't matter what type of bar or pub you work in, there is always a slump in business so we thought this would be a good way to encourage people into the town during Wimbledon fortnight.

“In the evening our bar tenders will be mixing up some fantastic cocktails.

"We will also have Pimms and a selection of the best British gins to try."

The couple say their plans will mean everyone can enjoy the fun of Wimbledon.

"If you haven’t managed to get tickets for the Wimbledon Championships, it looks set to be game, set and match to Wimbornedon this summer," she said.

Ian Faulkner, chairman of the Wimborne Business Improvement District, said: “It is great to see businesses in Wimborne working hard to bring people into town with innovative ideas like Wimbornedon.

"Visitors of all ages can enjoy the activities in the Square and take the opportunity to discover more of what Wimborne as a town has to offer.”
