STEAM engine fans are gearing up for this summer's Great Dorset Steam Fair, which takes place a week earlier than usual.

The family-run fair, which features a huge range of steam-powered, vintage, classic and military vehicles alongside rides and other attractions at its site near Blandford, is now in its 48th year.

This year the event is due to take place during the August bank holiday weekend instead of the week after in a bid to allow more families to attend, and will run from Thursday to Monday instead of Wednesday to Sunday.

Managing director Martin Oliver said: "It is clear even at this early stage that the new dates are a big hit with families.

"There has been overwhelming support from our regular visitors, exhibitors, traders and contractors, which we are very grateful for.

"We have also been receiving very positive feedback on the new dates from parents who were unable to attend last year, due to children being back at school.

"This really is a fantastic family event and the positive increase in ticket sales so far this year tells us that our visitors agree.

"Now that we no longer clash with other major local events such as the Bournemouth Air Show and the Dorset County Show, we also hope to welcome more visitors from Dorchester, Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth this year.

"We have a brilliant event planned with lots of exciting announcements to share with our visitors over the coming months."

The fair is billed as the world’s largest heritage and cultural event showcasing the UK's national industrial, agricultural and leisure history.

It is estimated to be worth around £21 million to the economy of Dorset and the wider region.

The organisers also announced alterations to the ticket structure with Sunday, August 28, requiring a full day ticket and the Bank Holiday Monday a discounted ticket.

Also the show will stay open until 5pm on the Monday.
