CROWDS lined the streets to take in all the sights and sounds of Poole Carnival on Sunday as a colourful procession made its way along Ashley Road.

Dance troupes, bands, bikers, charities, youth groups and businesses were among those joining the parade, with pirates, superheroes, Sesame Street characters and even a giant bumble bee among the folk in fancy dress at the fiesta.

Carnival Queen 17-year-old Caja Toohey, and Carnival Princess Stacie Lawson, 20, who were crowned by former Miss World and carnival patron Ann Sidney at a gala event earlier in the year, helped Poole Mayor Ann Stribley judge the entries, before the two glamorous girls joined the procession, waving from an opened topped car.

Paula Coombs was there with children five-year-old Raiden and Jazmine, 11, as well as her 17-month-old triplets Ryleigh, Baeley and Logan.

She told the Daily Echo: “It’s their first carnival so they’re very excited. It was lovely - I think they liked the bumble bee the best!”

Helder Vieira was there with his wife Tracy and children Eric, 10, and seven-year-old Celina. He said: “It’s great to see the amount of people who have turned out today - the weather has helped! It’s great for the community here - that’s what it’s all about.”

In all 29 entries took part in the parade which started at Sea View Road shortly at 11.15am and made its way along Ashley Road to Alder Road and then to Branksome Recreation Ground where there was a fun day with rides, games, stalls, live entertainment, a flower show and refreshments to keep families entertained throughout the afternoon.

Richard Wilson, chairman of the Poole Carnival Committee, said the carnival, which is in its second year this year, had been a huge success with thousands flocking to the rec, where twice many stalls and games had been laid on compared to last year.

He added: “It’s been fantastic. The procession was brilliant and so many people have come along. We’ve had a walk around and everyone seems to be having a brilliant time.”

The event was raising money for Julia’s House and Gully’s Place.
