FALCONRY, farm animals, live music, crafts and fun dog displays attracted hundreds of people to the first day of a country show in Upton.

The seventh annual Poole Town and Country Show is taking place in the grounds of Upton Country Park across Saturday and Sunday, aiming to show residents some of the best family fun activities.

Organised by Charlie and Emma Owen of Oakleigh Fairs, the event was treated to golden sunshine on Saturday to allow people to enjoy the great outdoors.

Emma said: "We are having a record Saturday, which is normally the quieter of the two days, but the lovely people of Dorset have come out in their droves.

"We have a whole host of events in the display arena, including birds of prey, Purbeck Gun Dogs, Purbeck Ferret Rescue, miniature pony parades, petting farm for kids, Newfoundland dogs, and lots of outside stands.

"It's all a celebration of traditional family fun. We've got something for the grannies and grandpas, steam engines, if that's your bag, and a folk band and beer tent.

"It's kind of how we like to imagine your perfect day out would be."

Emma also said that the team at Upton House had worked hard to ensure that the land was prepared and everything was in place that they needed for the show.

Rob Courtney from Paddocks Plants said: "This is the first time that we have done the show as we do something every weekend March to September and just had this slot available to do it.

"It's been fantastic and very busy but also very entertaining and there's lots for people to see. We are also the only plant stall here which means that we are selling lots of plants and the weather has definitely helped."

Marcus Curran from Totally Ponies manned a stand featuring Tommy and Bella the miniature Shetland ponies, which were taking part in fun races.

He said: "We put a couple of jumps up and then we bring along a couple of horses in for them to race and then we get some children from the audience to try and beat those times."
