IT'S the festival where spontaneous dancing in the streets isn't just welcome - it's actively encouraged.

Despite a gloomy weather forecast, thousands attended the Shake and Stir Vintage Festival in Fisherman's Walk, Southbourne during the weekend.

The umbrellas went up but crowds weren't deterred on Saturday as Matchbox 45, the High Budden Blue Chords and the All Night Workers took to the main stage to perform.

And on Sunday, the sun make a welcome reappearance, doubling the numbers who turned out to watch Bournemouth University's Big Band, Sinatra and Matt Monro tribute Anthony Adams and duo the Land Girls, among others.

The event also featured trade stands, dance classes, food and drink, vintage cars, games for children and more.

Heather Martyn, who helps to organise the festival - now in its third year - said: "It has been an absolutely amazing year for the festival.

"It's been so well-attended, particularly today (Sunday). I think there must be double the number of people than there were yesterday. People are sitting in the grass having a picnic together and listening to the bands play. There's a wonderful atmosphere.

"When we had a look at the forecast, I think there was a panic about the showers. But nobody who was here on Saturday left when it started to rain. People put their brollies up or moved under trees, and then as soon as it finished raining, they were back out and dancing again."

Already, festival-goers have given glowing reviews of the event to organisers.

"We've had such good feedback," said Heather.

"People have been coming up to say that they've had a fantastic time, and asking us whether we're going to do it again next year, so that's lovely to hear."

The festival launched on Friday evening with live music, cocktails and a barbecue at the Cliff House Hotel.

During the weekend, visitors were also welcomed to venues including the Grove Tavern and Ludo Lounge, with many staying at local hotels and B&Bs.

Heather said: "The event was designed to bring people into Southbourne.

"It gives us a chance to highlight such a wonderful area, as well as our traders. Hopefully, some of the people who have come along this weekend will come back again another time."
