HUNDREDS had good, healthy fun on Christchurch Quay at the weekend for the fifth annual Fit Christchurch event.

With all the family-friendly entertainment of a fete, but the aim of encouraging healthy eating and exercise, there was something for all to enjoy.

Visitors were treated to zumba displays, an inflatable assault course and bucking bronco, belly-dancing and more during the day.

For the first time ever, the fun day also featured the Christchurch Family Bike Ride from the quay to Mudeford Quay and back.

Event organiser Pete Griffiths said: “The aim of the day is to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“We’ve got exhibitors from all walks of life here today covering everything from healthy eating to hobbies and pastimes.

“We just want to get people up and doing something this weekend instead of just sitting around and watching telly.”

The day is part of the Fit Christchurch programme, led by the borough council, Christchurch Community Partnership and Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre.

Last year’s event was held at Barrack Road Recreation Ground in conjunction with the Olympic Torch Relay celebrations, which took place in July.

Among the highlights on offer on Saturday was a display by members of the Dorset Taekwondo Association, who dazzled crowds with a series of complex moves.

Olivia Proudley of the group said: “We display here every year, and it’s always very popular.

“The crowd really loves seeing the show.”

Many youngsters had the opportunity to take part in Fire Fit with real Dorset firefighters.

The initiative, created by firefighters James Goldsmith and Jason Bethell, features a series of competitive events including hose running, and is delivered at schools and open days around the county.

Jason, who is based in Springbourne, said: “The kids have really been enjoying it.

“It’s the first time we’ve brought Fire Fit here, but it fits in perfectly. We’ve been pretty busy, which is great.”
