On Tuesday (10th Feb) Bournemouth University students were invited to an Eco-Pamper Night organised by SUBU Beach Champions. In conjunction with Litter Free Coast and Sea, the event educated students on the harm microbeads can cause to marine life whilst offering pampering activities courtesy of Lush Cosmetics.

Litter Free Coast and Sea advised students on how to keep our local beaches clean such as not flushing wet wipes, not pouring fat down the sick or using microbeads. These are tiny plastic particles used in various beauty products such as face washes or toothpastes. As they are too small to be filtered in our water treatment system, microbeads are then consumed by marine life thinking it is food.

Alys Penfold, who organised the event, said “I’m really pleased with how the event went, it was so popular that we even had to add another 10 spaces! Everybody seemed to take a lot away from the event, and having Lush there made it really fun. We can do our bit whilst enjoying the beach, by picking up and disposing of litter, but we can also make a huge difference away from it.”

SUBU Beach Champions organise several events through out the year, running regular beach cleans and student campaigns as part of SUBU Volunteering.
