A DOUBLE celebration is under way at Poole's Carter Community School after the release of an inspection report and publication of exam results.

The school, which was heavily criticised in an Ofsted report two years ago, has now been rated as Good by the government inspection body.

And progress made by students in their time at the Hamworthy school has been rated in the top 25 per cent nationwide.

Inspectors observed lessons and spoke to pupils, staff and parents during a two-day visit in January.

They praised Principal Sam Davidson and said she provides strong leadership and has sustained improvement since the last inspection.

They said there is capacity for further improvement and said pupils behave well and respond positively to the high-quality feedback they receive from staff.

The report concluded: "Where there is any variation in pupils’ achievement, school leaders accurately judge what is needed for pupils to improve and take appropriate action.

"School staff work effectively with a wide range of external services to improve the quality of education for pupils. The close partnership with a local pupil referral unit helps leaders to support any pupil who may be at risk of exclusion."

It urged the school to ensure that boys make the same progress as girls in the future and said spelling, punctuation and use of grammar are not consistently accurate.

But it said he most able pupils, disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs or disabilities make good progress.

Principal Sam Davidson said: "This is excellent news for everyone connected with the school and, in particular, students, parents, staff and governors whose continued support and dedication has played a key part in our ongoing improvement.

"Whilst we are fully aware there is still more to be done, we have been relentless over the past few years in setting high standards for our students and bringing our motto ‘Expect the Best’ to life in the classroom and beyond."
