POOLE could be in line for a new 'free school' for children with autism under plans submitted to the Department for Education.

Applicants the Delta Education Trust, which currently comprises They Quay School in Poole and the Coppice Spring School in Basingstoke, have submitted an application to establish a new school for 60 students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and related conditions including anxiety and speech and language needs.

Should it get the go-ahead the intention is to open the new school - to be called The Harbour School - in 2017/18.

Though the plans are still in the very early stages Borough of Poole councillors are being asked to support the idea in principle at tonight's full council meeting.

If the application is progressed to the 'pre-opening' stage, work would then begin with local authorities on options for a site for the new school.

The Trust’s preferred location is close to the A35 or A31 transport routes, possibly around close to Upton, Canford Arena, Merley or Bearwood. According to the report before Poole council next week the school would serve children in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. All three council's have all identified a gap in provision in this area, with pupils having to travel long distances to schools out of area.

If the Delta Trust's application is approved, the next stage will be a rigorous interview with the Department for Education after which they will hear whether their school has been given the green light. Funding for the project would come directly from the DfE.

Jo Perry CEO of Delta Education Trust said: “This is an exciting opportunity to develop a special place to learn at the heart of our community where each child will be able to develop their individual skills and talents and flourish. This is just the beginning of our journey and there are many challenges to come.I would like to thank council officers, Quay School parents, staff and Governors who have provided unstinting support throughout the application process.”

Cllr Mike White, cabinet portfolio holder for children and young people said: “Borough of Poole would want to work with colleagues at Bournemouth Borough Council and Dorset County Council, the Delta Trust and the DFE to support the development of a new local provision.”
