BUDDING politicians from Arnewood School were given the opportunity to quiz politicians from New Milton Town Council.

The school council, made up of two students from each year group, was invited to meet representatives and raise issues that matter to the students.

Mayor, David Hawkins, said: "It was very pleasing to see the future generation of elected representatives putting themselves forward as they are the future decision-makers and potential town councillors in the making."

The meeting produced a useful exchange of views between the students and councillors who tackled such issues as ecology and clean and safe amenities in the town.

Students asked questions about what should be done to make the town more eco-friendly and what measures could be put in place to improve the cleanliness and safety of alleyways.

There was also a discussion on how to reduce New Milton’s carbon footprint, with suggestions on reducing the number of plastic supermarket bags, increased recycling and potential use of electric vehicles.

Student Council member and deputy head girl, Tegan Gears, said: "It was interesting to meet with town councillors and discuss issues of interest to young people in New Milton.

"We enjoyed the exchange of ideas about improving local ecology and making public amenities even better for all ages."

The Arnewood School Council is elected every year by fellow students following an election campaign and hustings.

It is chaired by the head boy and head girl of the school.
