A TEACHER who "goes above and beyond the call of duty" to make sure students get the support they need has been nominated for the Daily Echo School Awards.

Catherine Inglis, who is the assistant head of school at Elm Academy in West Howe, Bournemouth, has been nominated for the Primary Teacher of the Year Award.

As well as her managerial role at the school she is also responsible for supporting those students with special educational needs.

In her nomination it said: "We nominate Mrs Inglis because she is always empathetic, kind, understanding and goes above and beyond the call of duty.

"She supports parents, families and children and is always available to listen.

"Mrs Inglis is also never judgemental in her approach to children's backgrounds and their ability to learn.

"She treats every child as an individual and is always smiling and happy."

The competition, which was launched last week, aims to reward excellence in education from head teachers to lunchtime supervisors.

It is down to members of the public to nominate those who make their local schools special – and so far we have received dozens of recommendations.

Nominations are sought in nine different categories and include not only teachers and school leaders but all the support staff who go the extra mile to enhance the education of young people across Dorset and its borders.

From now until the February 5 deadline we will be searching for excellence, innovation, inspiration and endeavour in education.

After the deadline expires, a specially-selected panel of judges will whittle the nominations down to three in each category.

The 27 people who are shortlisted, along with a guest of their choice, will be invited to a glittering awards ceremony at Bournemouth’s Cumberland Hotel on the East Cliff on Thursday, March 17 next year.

Each of the categories will be sponsored by a local business. To discuss partnership and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Angela Boyer (the sales and events manager) on 01202 411221 or email angela.boyer@bournemouthecho.co.uk.

  • Do they recognise talent but also ensure all are included?
  • Do they get children to express themselves through art or music
  • Do they accept all forms of art/creative talent – not putting children into ‘boxes’
