STAFF and students at Poole's Victoria Education Centre are celebrating after it was judged Outstanding by Ofsted.

Inspectors said it has improved well since its last inspection and praised pupils' progress, behaviour and top-quality teaching.

The school, in Lindsay Road, offers day and residential places for 92 young disabled people between the ages of three and 19.

All students have complex medical requirements and the school caters for a variety of needs including communication difficulties, learning difficulties and sensory impairments.

Inspectors visited the school for two days last month and were also impressed with the leadership and management of the school.

Head teacher Simon Brown said: "We are very proud that the outcome reflects both the hard work and continued dedication of the whole school community and delighted that the inspectors recognised the school’s unique strengths.

"The report notes the high levels of engagement and support provided to enable students to reach their potential. This involves exceptional relationships between staff and students, impressive therapy and personalised learning that results in students developing their communication, mobility, physical and independence skills exceptionally well.

"We are making a real difference to the lives of our students and their families. We are delighted that the efforts of all those involved and the achievements of the school have been recognised by Ofsted. However we will not rest on our laurels. We will continue to ensure that we are doing our very best for every student."

Inspectors said the school's work to keep the children safe and secure is outstanding and added: "Staff are highly committed and enjoy their work. Parents are equally fulsome in their praise of the school and hold it in high esteem."
