THE classroom for 24 Poole High students was extended to the nearby Dolphin Shopping Centre when they were treated to a pop-up learning day.

Local community interest company Destination Education (DE) took over an empty shop unit for the event which helped the students focus on their futures, looking at their values, skills, motivation and heroes.

They were helped by some excellent resources and teenage-friendly music and videos.

"I wasn't sure about my career choice or what I aim to do in the future but as the day went by it started to become clear - it was amazing," said one student.

The programme is sponsored by DE's premier member, Teachers Building Society, which reaps the benefits of the "My" Life programme in terms of business recognition and in developing staff skills through volunteering.

Chelsea Ball, a volunteer at the event said: "Students were really engaged and seemed to take a lot from the day, it was good to interact with them. I gained confidence and communication skills.”

The hard work was finished off with some fun at the Project Climbing Centre, where the youngsters tried their hand at climbing and parkour (free running).

"This was a brilliant day with great activities throughout," said Mr A Jones, head of PE at Poole High. "It has given students the opportunity to learn outside the classroom about how they can motivate themselves to achieve their full potential.”

Destination Education offers a range of programmes, focusing on different skills, designed to close the gap between local businesses and schools.

Dolphin Shopping Centre is the latest business to sign up as a championship sponsor of the programmes.
