A SCHOOL in Bournemouth has received an award for placing more students into the National Citizenship Scheme than any other school in the area.

St Peter's School on Saint Catherine's Road was given the accolade as champions of the programme, with Sarah Middleton, Head of Sixth Form, taking receipt of the accolade.

She said: "She was delighted to hear that St Peter’s sixth formers had made such a positive impression on the programme, raising hundreds of pounds for charity and getting their hands dirty on conservation work in the local area."

Nadir Amouri, course leader for the National Citizenship Scheme, said that the school's students had gained the reputation of saying 'Yes' when asked to have a go at something.

He added: "We are of course very proud of the 28 students who gave up their holidays to give back to the local community."

The school is also celebrating after Year 11 student, Leila Dickinson, won first prize in the young people's category of a poetry challenge.

She was among 33 poems chosen by Sir Andrew Motion, a poet, novelist, biographer and poet laureate of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2009 in Guernsey's International Poetry Competition.

Called Bedside Table, Leila's poem will be displayed all over the island in Guernsey Airport and on buses as part of their annual literary festival later in the year.

She was also given the opportunity to attend the awards ceremony and read her poem at the festival.
