PUPILS and staff at a Poole school are celebrating after earning a “good” rating from Ofsted inspectors.

Heatherlands Primary School in Parkstone was deemed good in all categories, and given just two areas of improvement as it works towards outstanding status.

Inspectors said school leaders had an ambitious drive for improvement, which saw all pupils receive a good education.

Achievement is good, with all groups of pupils making good progress in reading, writing and maths because of consistently good teaching.

Inspectors concluded that disadvantaged pupils, those who are disabled or who have special educational needs achieve as well as and sometimes better than other pupils.

And they remarked that pupils enjoyed school, with attendance and behaviour both good.

“Senior leaders have been effective in changing the school to a primary school without losing the strengths of the successful first school,” the report states.

“Their vision has been shared positively with staff and parents and all are committed to securing outcomes for pupils which prepare them well for the next stage of their education.”

Head teacher Christian Malone said: “We were very pleased with the report and felt that it is an accurate reflection of the school.

“We are determined we are going to become an outstanding school over time and we felt that inspection was really a good signal of the progress that the school has made.

“It’s always pleasing when Ofsted is able to recognise the hard work put in by all the staff and pupils of the school.”

Inspectors said teachers responsible for the youngest pupils now needed to consistently incorporate parents’ views into their assessments and also recommended that pupils are provided with more opportunities to apply their mathematical skills in different ways.
