PUPILS from a Poole school took part in a special World War One workshop to learn about infection prevention.

Youngsters from Buckholme Towers School and Nursery dressed in WW1 uniforms and took part in a series of interactive activities to learn about practices developed in the war, some of which are still used today.

Launched in partnership with AFC Bournemouth, the Nuffield Bournemouth Bug Busters schools campaign aims to educate schoolchildren about how to stop germs spreading.

It is hoped the programme will help children avoid preventable illnesses and reduce absences from school owing to sickness.

Activities included a game of ‘tag’ with AFC Bournemouth star Brett Pitman to show how germs spread, and a hand washing game where pupils covered their hands in UV powder to represent germs and were challenged to wash their hands properly before examining them under UV light to see if all their ‘bacteria’ had been cleaned away.

Chris Tickner, infection prevention lead at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, said: “We were delighted to see the children learning so effectively, not just about infection prevention, but about what life was like during the First World War.”

Iain Robertson, Headmaster of Buckholme Towers School and Nursery added: “The pupils love getting involved with interactive learning sessions where they can transport themselves into another era.

“I think the Bug Busters campaign will certainly be a success.”
