STUDENTS at a top Dorset school were given the chance to find out about careers in aviation when they received a special visit.

Airways Aviation bosses flew their new £1.7million AS350 Squirrel helicopter to Milton Abbey School to provide a presentation for pupils.

More than 20 students attended the formal presentation having expressed an interest to learn more about the training required to become a commercial pilot.

The visitors then allowed the students a close look at the helicopter.

Ollie Pennington, Airways Aviation managing director, said the company has launched a new theory course for those looking to take their first step towards a formal Commercial Pilot Licence training.

“Few people realise that someone can legally become a qualified commercial pilot at the age of 18 and that there are still many opportunities with the airlines” he said.

“We were delighted with the very intelligent questions we received from the students and they are most welcome to visit us at our Bourne-mouth airport base anytime to view our plane and helicopter fleet.”

Kate Timmis, director of studies, said: “This was a superb opportunity for our pupils to discuss aviation-based careers. “They benefited from a detailed presentation about career opportunities and the tour of the helicopter itself offered a tangible and exciting insight into the world of a commercial pilot.”
