The least we can expect

ALEX Adams has hardly covered himself in glory after being elected to Bournemouth council last May.

Accused at the outset of misleading the public over his role as a property developer by standing on an anti-development ticket, Cllr Adams was not exactly a regular visitor to the town hall.

He attended just a handful of meetings and went four months without going to a single one. The Conservatives won such a comprehensive victory in the Bournemouth poll that a number of candidates found themselves elected unexpectedly, with one or two quite possibly unprepared for office.

Mr Adams was not one of these "paper candidates" so it's fair to assume he knew what he was letting himself in for.

He has now resigned - news that will doubtless be well received by the residents of Charminster and Queens Park. There will now be a by-election (and one in Winton where another Conservative has resigned for family reasons) and the Conservatives may suffer a backlash from the fiasco in both.

All parties have a duty to ensure their candidates are willing and able to serve and have a clear idea of the responsibilities. The electors have a right to expect that much at least.

  • Today could be a pivotal moment in Bournemouth's future with the official launch of the air festival and the announcement of three Red Arrows appearances in the four-day event.

The festival, which will attract huge crowds, is exactly the kind of family entertainment that keeps the town well and truly on the national tourist map.

At last this could be the real deal.

The Lib-Dems cannot complain too much. In the last Council they had two councillors who did not turn up for a year and still claimed their allowances. 0ne was even a Cabinet member

During the election in Queens Park in May 2007 The Conservatives mislead people. The other candidates did not. It is wrong for councillors to increase their allowances massively and not help people they said they would.

Let's hope the electors of both areas show their disgust at the Tories poor showing since elected and boot them out.

A good strong independent 'common sense' candidate is needed, and should be elected in both.

But don't vote for the Lib-Dems who are even worse and the neo -fascists UKIP.
