A PARAGLIDER was helped to safety after landing in the water near Swanage.

The Swanage coastguard, inshore lifeboat and Portland coastguard rescue helicopter were called on Sunday afternoon to the incident near Ballard Point.

Once on scene the helicopter crew was able to confirm that the paraglider appeared uninjured and had made his way to a small cave just to the north of Ballard point, with no way of getting back to safe ground.

A spokesman for Swanage Coastguard Rescue Team said: “The easiest option, in the flat calm conditions, was to recover the paraglider to the inshore lifeboat, which arrived at the scene seven minutes after launching.

“The inshore lifeboat helped the paraglider collect his equipment and then returned him to the boathouse to dry out and meet the local Swanage coastguard volunteers. The inshore lifeboat was ready for further service by 4pm.”
