BUMPER crowds turned out in Swanage to watch the annual switching on of the Christmas tree lights on Saturday evening.

The tree, next to the town's railway station, was illuminated at 4.45pm on today during an evening that including refreshments, a tombola and live music.

Purbeck resident Andrew Morrison said: "There's always a nice turnout, I know its only November but this gets the town in the festive mood. Its one of the first events of the festive season."

Meanwhile, visitor Alison Sharp told the Echo: "Its nice to see this sort of community spirit. It is a lovely, tasteful tree as well."

There was also music and plenty of mulled wine, available at the station's buffet car throughout the evening.

Next Saturday, December 3, from 10am-4pm, the Swanage Rotary Christmas Market will take place in Station Road and Commercial Road.

A Swanage & Purbeck Rotary spokesman explained: "As well as plenty of gift ideas, food stalls and - of course – Santa in his Grotto, there will be live festive music playing on the main stage throughout the day.

"All profits from this market will benefit rotary supported local charities. Entrance to both the market and Santa's Grotto is free."

Then the following Friday, December 9, the popular Swanage Railway Victorian Carol Train - where volunteers don period dress - is scheduled to take place.

This carol train event is set to include appearances from the Swanage Town Crier, Swanage School Choir, Harmony Rocks Choir and the Swanage Town Band.
