SWANAGE Pier Trust is celebrating the launch of its appeal with its first 'Pier Partner', Bluebird Care Dorset.

The new corporate partnership opportunities have been introduced as part of the £900,000 Save Swanage Pier Appeal.

Companies can sign up to become a Corporate Sponsor, Pier Guardian, Structure Sponsor or Pier Partner.

Bluebird Care Dorset director Chris Scriven said: "We first came into contact with Swanage Pier Trust some time ago and were determined to become involved to help preserve and restore such an important local landmark.

"For many of our older customers, the iconic image of the pier will form the backdrop to some of their fondest memories.

"The pier takes a pivotal role in defining the culture and atmosphere of the town and should be supported to ensure it remains for future generations to enjoy."

Swanage Pier has already been allocated provisional funds of more than £800,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

However, in order to secure the National Lottery cash Swanage Pier Trust needs to raise an additional £900,000 by August next year.

The Grade II-listed structure suffered serious storm damage in March 2013, when a structural pile was swept out to sea in high tides and gale force winds.

That damage, which almost caused the pier's walkway to collapse, left the structure partially closed for months.

According to the latest survey Swanage Pier is at risk of collapse with 41 of its timber piles in a 'critical condition'.

Swanage Pier Trust chief executive Ben Adeney said: "Swanage Pier is an integral part of the town's character and tourism appeal, as well as an important attraction bringing over 125,000 visitors each year.

"Several local businesses are reliant on the pier and many local companies use the pier's iconic image as part of their corporate branding.

"Dorset County Council has estimated that the pier contributes approximately £2.5 million to the local economy each year, so it is hugely important to the community and local businesses."
