COLD and windy weather did not deter families from coming along to the Swanage Rotary Christmas Fayre on Saturday.

Among the entertainment on offer to visitors of all ages were over 50 stalls selling food, drink, sweets and Christmas gifts, live music, and the chance to meet Father Christmas who arrived on his sleigh.

Doug Quayle from Swanage Rotary Club said: "I was really chuffed with how it went. We stayed talking for about four hours on Friday night deciding whether we should put it on because of the wind, which was forecast to be up to 50mph and now I'm really pleased that we did."

He said that Swanage Rotary Club had their own mini Christmas market in a shop in Mermond Place and during the event visitors could purchase paintings and art, roasted chestnuts and handmade wooden reindeer.

Mr Quayle said that the event took place with huge support from Chococo, who also had a stall offering chocolate treats outside their shop on Commercial Road.

"Quite a few of the shopkeepers joined in and brought tables outside their shops to sell mince pies and things and we had a lot of live music including a performance from the Belvedere Singers.

"There were a number of charities there including Cancare, who hopefully raised a lot of money for their causes, and all our money that we raised is going to the Christmas lights in Swanage.

"It was a really lovely day. From about 10.30am, which is half an hour after it started, to about 3.30pm it was packed."

Father Christmas and his sleigh will be travelling around the streets of Swanage each day until Friday, December 18 from 6pm to 8pm.

He will be joined by carol singers to entertain families during the festive period and hand out sweets for children to enjoy.
