£1.8m plan to sort out Upton estate

PLANNING chiefs look set to sanction a £1.8 million regeneration project for an Upton estate that has been plagued by antisocial behaviour.

The redevelopment of the Upton Heath Estate, Poole, including installation of CCTV, goes before Purbeck District Council’s planning board today.

Residents’ association chairman Simon Williams said: “When I initially took over as chairman in 2003, there was a lot of antisocial behaviour on the estate.

“We still have groups of teenagers hanging around, using the garages as drinking dens and drug taking – hypodermic needles have been found on the estate in the past.”

Work on the redevelopment plan started in 2007.

Mr Williams said: “I hope the proposals will be agreed by the council, as this is a positive step for the area.

“The cameras will be useful, especially as we are so close to Upton Woods, which are often used by undesirables and also as an escape route for fleeing criminal from other parts of the area.

“We are not talking about major crime on the estate, it’s just antisocial behaviour.

“But we have a number of elderly residents who don’t like going out at night because of groups of young people. If we provide these young people with something to do, it will certainly alleviate the problem.

“The facilities in this part of Upton are minimal, to say the least.”

Council officers have recommended the planning board grants the planning application.

Drinking dens, drug taking, elderly residents not able to go out at night but we are not talking about major crime?
If the residents are too frightened to go out at night, why is this not major crime?
The answer is simple.
Any family member convicted of any crime and the family is moved out.
Build a ghetto, miles from anywhere and put these families in them, make them earn the right to live amongst decent people!

That would be nice. I think I'll cause a bit of damage somewhere and get "transported to the Colonies". Incidentally, there is a bridge over the river as you come into Wareham that still has a metal plate on it, with that very warning! Wonder if it's still valid in Law.

Where ever you go you'll find a nasty housing estate. Upton heath has always been like that, so has Turlin moor, Waterloo estate, Newtown estate, Rossmore, West Howe, Tricketts cross, Bear cross etc etc...why it happens no one person really knows, it will always be that way and no amount of money will change anything unless you change the mindset of the mindless.
