Folk music will be turned on its head this summer at the Purbeck Valley Folk Festival (August 16-19 ), the turbo-charged Trad.Attack! are set to perform.

The trio deliver fresh folk music from Estonia, which is passionate, powerful and true to its roots.

Combining the bagpipe playing and vocals of Sandra Vabarna, virtuoso guitar of Jalmar Vabarna and inventive percussion of Tõnu Tubli, the three friends take their inspiration from old archive recordings of Estonian traditional songs.

On stage, the band build pulsating rhythmic structures, creating an impressively big sound from acoustic 12-string guitar, drums and an array of whistles, bagpipes and jew’s harps.

Since 2014, they have released two albums including last year’s ‘Kullakarva - Shimmer Gold’, which they have been touring around the world.

The turbo-charged folkies escalated to national fame in their home country because of their fusion of traditional themes, modern production ideas and a relentlessly energetic stage presence. They invite you on an exciting journey to the mystical Estonian nature, traditions and people where the new and old collide and spark.

At their first concert Trad.Attack! made a joke about having a master-plan to play in every country in the world. Surprisingly it has become real and within three years the band has played in 31 countries.

Catherine Burke, organiser of Purbeck Valley Folk Festival says: “We’re excited to have Estonian turbo folk band at the festival. This is a band which has taken the world music scene by storm and played festivals across the globe!"

Major headline acts announced so far include Richard Thompson and his Electric Trio with further acts to be unveiled over the coming months.
