A ROAD in Swanage is closed after a marquee blew over in the early hours of this morning.

Shore Road is currently closed between Victoria Avenue and Walrond Road.

Police were called at 12.28am to reports of two large marquees that had been picked up in the wind from Sandpit Field.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 2.49am to reports of two large marquees that had blown over.

The second marquee got stuck in a tree.

One crew from Swanage attended and they returned to the station at 3.56am.

The marquee was erected for the Purbeck Outdoor Weekend which takes place this weekend.

Event organiser Jason Haiselden said: “It’s unfortunate, but it’s not a right off for the event.

"We have a full team in place that have responded very quickly.

"We always work closely with the council and all of the emergency services, including the Coastguard and adhere to the highest health and safety standards, so it’s not anything we can’t handle."

Highways England issued an amber warning for the whole of the country for Tuesday night as Storm Aileen approached the UK and urged drivers to take care.

A number of weather warnings were issued by the Met Office, however none were issued for Dorset.
