DO not take unnecessary risks on the Dorset coast. That’s the message from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency after this picture of a climber at Durdle Door was taken by Kimmeridge Coastguard earlier this week. They had received reports of a climber on the cliff and were relieved to discover the climber had made it to the top safely when they arrived.
Posting the image on their Facebook page, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “Incidents like this are always worrying for us to see so we thought a few timely safety tips will help keep you safe at the coast.”
Tips include using designated paths, taking notice of any warning signs and fences in place and not taking any unnecessary risks.
People are being urged not to climb up or down cliffs unless they are properly equipped and trained to do so.
Walkers are also being advised to wear sturdy shoes or boots and to check the weather forecast and tidal times before setting out, as well as carrying a fully charged mobile phone.
They added: “Leave the rescue to the experts. Our Coastguards are trained in all types of rescue on the coast, including dog rescues so if you see someone in trouble call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
Last weekend a man was airlifted to hospital after a fall at Durdle Door, then on Thursday a teenager had to be airlifted to hospital after falling in the sea at Lulworth Cove.
